Klaaz ...English explanation of above conversation:

Klaaz suggested 'Mist' (Dutch word) is a better word for 'Fog' than 'Wasem'. Also 'Kielgolven' instead of 'Rimples' (a specific boating term instead of a word used for ripples caused by anything - and which doubles as a work for wrinkles on skin). Also "Vloibare" instead of "Vloiende" (I think vloiebare is closer to 'fluid' and vloiende closer to 'flowing').

Klaaz also questioned, "what to do with a light river and a denser one?"
"Dunne" and "dikkere" get the basic meaning across, but they don't sound that great. (In English, this would be sort of like writing "thin" and "fatter".)
Klaaz mentioned "lichte" and "dichte" as possible alternative words.

In my reply to Klaaz, I have said thanks because I didn't previously know that "dicht" could mean "thick" - I've only seen it in the context of "closed". I did some google searches and found that mist is frequently described as "dicht". Rivers aren't though. Therefore I asked Klaaz whether "een lichte rivier op een dichte" was a possibility or not, and, if it can work, whether it would sound better.

I also queried two possible other new words - "ijl" and "zwaarder". "Ijl" is, so far as I understand, a somewhat old-fashioned and poetic word that can mean light or also frail (eg a sick person could be ijl). Zwaarder generally means heavier, but I think it can have connotations of thickness too. Or at least, in my cycle classes at the gym, I am constantly telling the participants to "maak hem zwaarder!" (turn up the dial that makes it harder to push the pedals).ameliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06422730710365058243noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491585929806505640.post-71027032407769980682011-04-11T04:26:41.604-07:002011-04-11T04:26:41.604-07:00bedankt klaaz! :-)
